A few days later, he was dead. That aside, two ageing descendants, six generations removed, live less than 10 miles from the town, in Dalippur village. In Bihar, the land time forgot, Veer Kunwar Singh is himself the forgotten hero. Few remember him in the place where he was born in 1777, and where he valiantly fought the Company forces for a year, at the age of 80, eventually succumbing on April 26, 1858.
He was Bihar’s last lion, annihilating the forces of Captain Dunbar and Captain Le Grand to liberate Azamgarh, participating with Tantya Tope in the Battle of Kanpur. In a country where heritage is just another word, Kunwar Singh is just another name. His fort and palace in Jagdishpur have been almost entirely demolished. Only two pillars remain, freshly coated with pale yellow lime wash.Scraps of history are scattered here. Two statues of the warrior for freedom, enclosed, inexplicably, behind iron bars; a waterless fountain; a dry well said to be dug by Kunwar Singh; three street dogs sleeping peacefully; dirt strewn everywhere; two large peepal trees under which villagers pass time in the summer heat: this is Jagdishpur’s tribute to the man who made it famous. Also present are sweeper Lal Babu, and a company of State Auxiliary Police (SAP) jawans.“The local police station inspector had an office here in a room where some of Kunwar Singh’s personal belongings and weapons were kept,” remembers Lal Babu, “but that was looted or burnt in the fire of 2002.” The memorial’s caretaker, Jay Prakash Narayan Singh, visits only occasionally. He lives in Patna and is also in charge of the Karpoori Thakur Museum there.
In 1972-73, the Bihar Government had taken over the ruins of Kunwar Singh’s palace to make it a museum. Over 115 years, it had become a public lavatory, and a grazing ground for cattle. Villagers broke open the gates and built a connecting road by demolishing boundary walls, says Krishna Sahu, resident of Jagdishpur.More recently, under pressure from the Veer Kunwar Singh Smarak Samiti, the State government decided to repair the structure and upgrade the museum. RJD chief and former chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav inaugurated the renovated building in July 2003. In April 2005, Union Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan unveiled the black statue of the martyred Rajput. It joined a white statue that had been installed in 1983. In the time-span between the two statues, Kunwar Singh’s home continued to resemble a morgue.Hope was rekindled on April 23, 2007, when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited and promised to make the Veer Kunwar Singh Museum a showpiece. Since then, electricity supply has become regular and SAP jawans have been stationed.“We’ve locked the gates from both sides and closed the public passage,” explains an SAP constable, “and swept the compound clean.” It took great persuasion to get him to allow The Pioneer team to shoot photographs, including establishing press credentials and producing identity cards. The palace is out of bounds for walk-in visitors. In India heritage means either a free-for-all or government bureaucracy. There are no half-measures.In Dalippur village, pride for Kunwar Singh is a personal affair. Bharat Bhushan Singh is in his sixties and, with younger brother Pradeep Kumar Singh, is happy to show off the genealogical chart of the family. Sahabzada Singh had four sons - Kunwar Singh, Dayal Singh, Rajpatti Singh and Amar Singh. “We belong to the line of Dayal Singh, who looked after the Jagdishpur estate,” says Bharat Bhushan, who retired from Indian Oil Corporation. In 1857, there were two vast estates in this part of Bihar - Jagdishpur and Dumraon (Buxar district, but like Jagdishpur part of the Bhojpur region). “Jagdishpur estate had 900 villages under its fiefdom whereas Dumraon had 800 or so,” says Bharat Bhushan, “Jagdishpur was a bigger estate, but since the Dumraon family was pro-government, it flourished. Kunwar Singh fought the Britishers, and so we are here!” “There’s nothing left for us to feel proud of … except the legend of Kunwar Singh,” adds farmer Pradeep Kumar Singh, Bharat Bhushan’s cousin.“A total of 32 individuals can claim descent from Kunwar Singh,” says Pradeep, “they’re of the sixth and seventh generation.” In his time, the stalwart of Bhojpur took on the world’s mightiest business corporation in an epic contest. Today, other companies preoccupy his descendants, as they find employment in Reliance Petroleum, HDFC Bank and as stock brokers.May be Kunwar Singh should have backed the British. He was famous for bravery amongst his colleagues. An english scholar "Fisher" has written that Shri Mangal Pandey was having all qualities of a good soldier. He was so brave and capable to embrace his death peacefully.

According to the records available in Jabalpur museum( general order books). Shri Mangal Pandey was due to be executed on 18th April but he was hanged ten days before i.e. 8th April and it was kept secret. Because english rules were well aware of the fact that if Mangal Pandey remains alive it will endanger British rule.

Thus Mangal Pandey became the first freedom fighter and martyr of 1857. The name of Mangal Pandey became an emblem of revolt against British rule. He was a soldier of the 34th Native Infantry whose attack on a superior officer came to be recognised as the event that sparked India's First War of Independence. Little is known of his life before that momentous incident but he has been declared a martyr since.

On March 29, 1857, at Barrackpore near Kolkata, Mangal Pandey started an open mutiny, inviting his comrades to join him. Pandey attacked his British sergeant and wounded an adjutant. The office in charge, General Hearsay, noticed that Pandey was in the throes of some sort of 'religious frenzy', and ordered a jamadaar to arrest him. The latter refused. Surrounded by guards and European officers, Pandey tried to commit suicide by shooting himself. He was seriously wounded, and promptly arrested. Following a court-martial on April 6, he was hanged at Barrackpore on April 8, 1857. As a collective punishment for his act, the entire regiment was also dismissed.

According to records at the Jabalpur Museum, Pandey was to be executed on April 18. But he was hanged 10 days earlier to prevent the regiment from harbouring ill will against superiors. The English were also aware that news of Pandey's death could spark more unrest. Going by the date on which he was executed, Mangal Pandey became the first freedom fighter and martyr of 1857. His name has since been synonymous with revolt.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4679911499643131890.post-44510570917068731342012-02-08T17:46:00.001-08:002012-02-08T17:46:58.879-08:00Flag of JAGDISHPUR

The flag of the State of Jagdishpur is shown This state was in today's Kaimur district in Bihar state, India, in the former Shahabad district.
The flag is quartered gold and red, with a central white disk with a black line of a wolf's head(?) surrounded by Hindi script.
Under the British Raj zamindars were large landholders with some governmental responsibilities but they were not equivalent to the rulers of Princely States। There were under the direct authority of either the British administration or one of the actual Princely States.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4679911499643131890.post-33473023443377563902010-02-08T19:37:00.000-08:002012-02-08T19:52:51.097-08:00Pin codes of Indian Villages and Town

Postal Index Number (PIN) is a 6 digit code. There are 8 PIN regions in the country. It is a private army of upper-caste landowners and is known to be operating in central Bihar.
The nomenclature ‘Ranvir’ has been adapted from the mythical figure Ranvir Baba. As the legend goes, during the late 19th century, Ranvir Baba, a retired military man and a resident of Belaur village in Bhojpur district, protected the rights of the Bhumihars, a land-owing upper caste of the State, against the Rajputs. It is said that, due to the activities of Ranvir Baba, the Bhumihars asserted their power in Bhojpur district. And ‘sena’ means army.
The Ranvir Sena came into existence primarily to counter the influence of various left-wing extremist, Naxalite, groups and the Communist Party of India, Marxist-Leninist [CPI-ML] (Liberation) in central Bihar. It was founded in September 1994 in Belaur village of Udwantnagar block, Bhojpur district following the merger of private caste armies like Savarna Liberation Army and the Sunlight Sena. The forerunners to the Ranvir Sena in Bhojpur district were the Brahmarshi Sena and Kuer Sena, Kisan Morcha and Ganga Sena. These senas were smaller in size and operated with a limited area. They could not sustain for long and had withered away owing to repeated Naxalite onslaughts.
Dharichan Chaudhary of Belaur had founded the Ranvir Sena. Its founding and continuing commander is Brahmeshwar Singh of Khopira village.
Objective:
The primary objective of the Ranvir Sena is to wipe out left-wing extremist groups from Bihar.
Area of Operation
From Bhojpur district where it was formed, over a period of time, the Ranvir Sena spread to Jehanabad, Patna, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Gaya, Bhabhua and Buxur districts. It mobilises the landed gentry in these districts against the People’s War Group (PWG), the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) and the CPI-ML (Liberation)
Leadership and Organisation:
The Ranvir Sena is highly organised, has extensive influence among landowners in its areas of operation, and is well endowed with financial resources.
Sena cadres are militarily better organised and are better paid than any of the private armies of the past. The cadres operate mostly underground while their leaders live in towns and come to a village only when a massacre has to be planned and executed.
Brahmeshwar Singh, on whose head the authorities have placed a reward of half a million Indian rupees, is the supreme commander of the Ranvir Sena. He was arrested in Patna on August 29, 2002. Initial reports said Shamsher Bahadur Singh was, on September 7, 2002, appointed new chief of the Ranvir Sena. However, according to a report of Dcember 25, 2002, the chief of the Ranvir Sena is Bhuar Thakur. He, too, was arrested on December 24.
The outfit has an estimated strength of 400 underground cadres. Landowners in central Bihar finance the Sena through “generous” subscriptions. Official sources, in the year 2000, said each member of the Sena is paid between Rs. 1,100 and Rs. 1,200 per month for work that essentially involves committing murders. Besides, the life of each cadre participating in a massacre is insured for a hundred thousand Indian rupees.
The Ranvir Sena has also founded a front organisation named Ranvir Kisan Maha Sangh, which looks after socio-economic and political activities of the upper castes. The Ranvir Mahila Sangh, a women’s wing has also been floated to organise upper caste women. They have been trained, too, in the use of arms.
Naxalite organisations cite the patronage extended by the various political parties as one of the reasons for the survival of the Ranvir Sena. They also allege that the State administration is partial towards the Sena. When India rose against the British authority in 1857, Kuer Singh was already past his prime being nearly 80 years old. Despite his age and failing health, when the call to fight came, the old lion plunged into the thick of it and for nearly a year battled fiercely against the British and allied forces with grim determination and undaunted courage. The long anticipated rebellion of Sepoys in Bihar took place simultaneously at two places, Sagauli and Danapur on 25th July 1857. On 27th July the Sepoys arrived at Ara where Kuer Singh assumed command. They besieged the English garrison at Ara and on the 29/30th of July 1857 inflicted a crushing defeat on the relieving column from Danapur under Capt. Dunbar, who was one of the first to be killed. Shahabad now passed virtually under Kuer Singh's control. the task of relieving Ara was now assigned to Major Vincent Eyre who advanced with his column from Buxar, he managed to reach Ara after defeating Kuer Singh in a furiously contested skirmish at Bibiganj on the 2/3rd of August 1857. By the 12th of August Major Eyre was able to capture Jagdispur, commit acts of Vandalism and perpetrate atrocities on the hapless citizens with impunity. The reverses at Jagdispur could not cow down Kuer Singh. On the 20th of august 1857, he was at Rohtas with upwards of 1000 men, 4 elephants, 14 camels and a lot of horses. Kuer Singh with his troops marched towards Rewah via Robertsganj, crossed the river Tons and captured Sawrajpur, about 30 miles south of Allahabad. On the 27th of august he reached Rewah, where some prominent nobles helped him. From Rewah, Kuer Singh proceeded to Banda, with a view of joining Tantia Topi. On the 8th of October at Banda the combined forces of Nawab Ali Bahadur and Kuer Singh attacked the Nimnipar fort and completely destroyed it. The Gwalior troops joined Kuer Singh at Kalpi and marched onto attack Kanpur on the 7th of November. The Gwalior contingent, Nana Sahib and Kuer Singh fought against the English forces at the battle of Kanpur in December 1857. Kuer Singh was soon at Lucknow where the Nawab of Oudh presented him "Khillat", a roll of honour, a few thousand rupees and a "Firman" for the district of Azamgarh. Around the 12th of February he was at Ayodhya with 2000 men. A batch of British troops under Col. Milman in the Azamgarh district attacked him but by the 27th of march Azamgarh came under Kuer Singh's control while the combined force of Dames and Milman lay besieged in the entrenchment near the jail. Col. Mark Kerr was deputed by Lord Canning the Governor General to relieve the Azamgarh entrenchment and crush Kuer Singh. Mark Kerr managed to reinforce the entrenchment at Azamgarh but he could not relieve it. In the process he had lost all his logistic support. Kuer Singh had checkmated him.Sir Colin Campbell, the Commander-in-Chief promptly dispatched Brig. General Sir Edward Lugard to tackle the threat posed by Kuer Singh. In a strategic move Kuer Singh left Azamgarh on the 13th of April with a part of his troops and advanced towards Ghazipur. After crossing the river Gogra he pushed onto Maniar in Ghazipur district in the night. On the morning of 21st of April Brig. Douglas made a surprise attack on the troops of Kuer Singh at Maniar. The latter dispersed themselves in different directions only to reassemble by the evening and proceeded during the night to the river. Inspite of sustaining personal injuries Kuer Singh with a large body of Sepoys crossed the Gangaat at Sheopur ghat, 10 miles from Balia. By the 22nd of April 1858 Kuer Singh had come to Jagdispur with about 1000 followers on foot and a few horsemen, strongly determined to continue fighting against the English even though he had lost one arm and was wounded in the thigh.Capt. Le Grand with a column of soldiers and two guns set out for Jagdispur from Ara on the evening of 22nd of April. The next day there was a skirmish with Kuer Singh's force at Dullaur after which Le Grand pressed on with his advance only to fall into an ambush in which he was killed and his forces routed. Kuer Singh was not destined to live longer, he succumbed to his injuries and died on the 26th of April 1858 at Jagdispur.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4679911499643131890.post-91433717202564910302007-12-21T20:47:00.000-08:002007-12-27T04:17:28.533-08:00Celebrating the Legacy of 1857At the Inquilab Rally of March 23 a campaign was launched to reassert ‘Our Country, History, Our Freedom, Our Rights’ – a campaign to take the anti-imperialist content of 1857 and Bhagat Singh to the people and to link it with the struggle against imperialism as we face it in our lives today: against SEZs, against the Indo-US Nuke Deal, against the scuttling of people’s rights to serve liberalization. In the month of May, this campaign was taken up in earnest in various ways in Bihar, Orissa, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, as well as all over Bengal. A report. May 10 in Bihar On May 10, the 150th anniversary of our first war of independence, CPI(ML) held a series of programmes in Bihar. A Balidan ko Salam (Salute the Sacrifice) event was held on May 10 at Jagdishpur (Ara) – the centre of Kunwar Singh’s brave battle against the British in 1857. For long, feudal forces have been appropriating Kunwar Singh as a hero of a particular caste, to legitimise the oppressive feudal order. This year, too, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar participated in a programme organised by a chieftain of a banned feudal army (a predecessor of the Ranveer Sena). The main organizer, in his new avatar as JD(U) leader even boasted that none other than Laloo Prasad had given him the certificate of being the true successor of Kunwar Singh! Not surprisingly, even Brahmeshwar Singh, the chieftain of the notorious Ranvir Sena and mafia don Visheshwar Ojha appeared in some papers, sitting along with the jail superintendent celeberating Kunwar Singh Jayanti! In contrast, CPI(ML), liberating Kunwar Singh from the clutches of the feudal forces, presented the mass rebellion of Shahabad led by him in the broader perspective of 1857: its remarkable armed guerrilla warfare of peasantry against imperialism, its Hindu-Muslim unity, and its spirit of democratic equality towards the peasant masses and oppressed castes. Addressing the programme, Comrade Dipankar Bhattacharya observed that the heroic peasant struggle of Bhojpur was continuation of the tradition of 1857; a life and death battle for liberty, self-respect and equality in the same Shahabad where Kunwar Singh had taken arms for freedom, at the age of 80 years. The editor of Janmat Comrade Ramji Rai, the national president of AIALA Comrade Rameshwar Prasad, and CPI(ML) MLA the legendary Comrade Ram Naresh Ram also addressed the gathering. There is a rich tradition of local songs in memory of Kunwar Singh’s war, waged largely from the forests around Jagdishpur – and this tradition was reflected in the event. Hirawal presented the 1857 ideologue Azimullah Khan’s song on 1857. Nirmal Nayan of Jan Sanskriti Manch from Rohtas rendered a song written freedom fighter Ramakant Dwivedi ‘Ramta’ in memory of Kunwar Singh and the martyrs of the freedom movement. Sudhir Suman also sang another long poem which Ramakant Dwivedi ‘Ramta’ had written on the occasion of the 1857 centenary year. The folk singers of Keshwa presented the songs of Master Ram Ayodhya on Kunwar Singh. The paintings prepared by the Keshwa village were also a centre of attraction. Santosh Jha of Hirawal presented the folk songs which described the struggle between Kunwar Singh’s army and the British army. These folk songs clearly showed the widespread support that Kunwar Singh got from the people in 1857.A painting exhibition titled ‘The War of Independence (1857-1947)’ and ‘The War Goes On’ by Arjun of Kala Kammune (Banaras) displayed paintings on 1857, Bhagat Singh and the Naxalbari movement. At Patna every year around May 10, an event is held to commemorate the legacy of Peer Ali, one of the leaders of the 1857 war who was martyred in Patna. A Free Medical Centre has been dedicated to Peer Ali’s memory and named after him. This year, the Shaheed Peer Ali Free Medical Centre and the Inquilabi Muslim Conference held a ‘Shahadat ko Salam’ (Salute the Martyrdom) celebration on May 11. The event was presided over by Ramji Rai and Shambhunath Mehta, founding member of the Shaheed Peer Ali Free Medical Centre, conducted the programme. The event began with respects being paid to the veteran people’s playwright Dr. Chaturbhuj. Well-known theatre person Rishikesh Sulabh paid tribute to Dr. Chaturbhuj, recalling that he had penned several plays on the martyrs of 1857 –Kunwar Singh, Lakhmibai, Bahadurshah Zafar as well as several nameless martyrs were the central characters of his plays. Two of his plays were on Peer Ali. In addition to writing these plays, he also directed them and travelled all over Bihar with a troupe of actors, presenting these plays in village after village. Rishikesh Sulabh and Dr. razi Ahmad presented a shawl to Dr. Chaturbhuj; after which Dr. Chaturbhuj, inspite of being over 80 years old, read out a part of his play on Peer Ali along with his son. The Seminar was addressed by Gandhian thinker Dr. Razi Ahmad, Director Khuda Baksh Oriental Library Prof. Imtiaz Ahmad, and Comrade Dipankar. At Gaya on May 12, a seminar was held to commemorate the legacy of 1857. A large gathering assembled at Ambedkar Park, and the seminar was addressed by Kisan Sabha leader Comrade Rajaram Singh, Socialist leader Shaukat Hayat Khan, veteran activist Brij Kishore Satyarthi, CPI District Secretary Akhilesh Kumar, Senior advocate Sartaj Ahmad, CPI(M) leader Pervez Ahmad and Kisan leader Yugal Kishore Sharma and Shambhunath Mehta. The main speaker was Comrade Dipankar Bhattacharya. The following resolutions were adopted in all these programmes: Scrap SEZs, Bring the mortal remains/ashes of Bahadur Shah Jafar from Rangoon and establish his mazar in Delhi, accord the status of national song to the flag song of 1857 composed by Azimullah Khan, ‘Hum hain iske malik, hindostan hamara’, and rename the children’s park marking Peer Ali’s hanging as Peer Ali Baageecha. In this regard, a 9 member committee was formed with Dr. Razi Ahmad as its convener and Shambhu Mehta, as co-convener.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4679911499643131890.post-45140750299216933362007-12-20T02:28:00.000-08:002007-12-27T04:18:42.095-08:00Babu Kunwar Singh Smriti Sangrahalay, BhojpurIn the year 1972, the Govt. of Bihar declared the paternal residence of Babu Kunwar Singh as the Babu Kunwar Singh Smriti Sangrahalaya at Jagdishpur (Bhojpur) with the view to commemorate the first war of independence of 1857.
